A survey of project management efficiency in Germany by PA Consulting Group and GPM
This study of project management best practice is based on a survey of 78 companies based in Germany. The critical success factors were determined by comparing high-performing companies with the entire group. This study identifies what the 10 most successful companies do differently. While some well-known correlations are confirmed, some new interdependencies are also revealed. Project management techniques such as controlling and reporting are used a lot less in small- and medium-sized projects. And there is some potential for improving the management of changing objectives during a project.
Other findings indicate that few companies develop a business case for a project or obtain broad acceptance from middle management before starting - especially for organizational change projects. Only three out of five projects had all the necessary resources at start-up - regardless of project size or type. The comparison of critical success factors shows that high-performing companies master a broader range of project management methods, especially stakeholder management, training of project team members and project managers and that they have good reporting and controlling in place.
